The game essentially says to you, "Well, you have to power level to win. Real-time battle is NEVER a good idea in a JRPG (or any RPG I'd say, though the recent Elder Scrolls games are exceptions), Especially not one like Tales of Symphonia. If I had to lay my issue on any one problem, I'd say it was the real-time battle system. There's far too much going on (Synthesize your weapons properly, pick the right title for everyone, learn all the combo moves, etc) but that's run of the mill for JRPG's, and normally you can avoid them ruining a game. To this day, years later, it remains unfinished.Īs far as I've been able to tell, part of my problem is that it just doesn't feel like a good game. maybe it's that I'm a fan of JRPGs, but the game was utterly incapable of holding my attention. It was short, but it wasn't really supposed to be a true "sequel" sequel, more of a sequential side story, and there was still more than enough time for me to get attached to Emil and Marta. Needless to say, I liked it a lot, with the possible exceptions of Lloyd and Zelos.

I know a ton of people want to disavow the thing's existence, and, well.I think these people are fools. I guess I should probably mention the sequel.

The only character who I think developed less was possibly Raine, if you don't count her repressed resentment of her mother (and I might even be wrong, since I'm only now playing through with her as my soulmate), but she was pretty awesome to begin with. Not that he didn't get any character development at all, but it was more the standard "hero matures" form, not the specific things like Sheena's confidence issues, Genis' heritage and racial prejudice, Regal's guilt, or Colette's, Presea's, and Zelos'.everything, really. Not that I didn't like him, but.the others got such wonderful development, he was sadly sort of lacking in that regard. It was seriously fun to play, the soundtrack was incredible (for this game and Baten Kaitos, I'd go so far as to say I almost like Matoi Sakuraba more than Nobou Uematsu.almost), the story had a wonderful tendency to throw me for a loop, and I absolutely loved the characters.Įxcept maybe Lloyd. It's my third favorite game of all time, and most favorite if you don't count Tsukihime and Fate/Stay Night because they're visual novels.
